5 Signs Your Surrey Business Has Outgrown Wix

You've probably outgrown Wix if two or more of these are true:

  1. You design around what the template allows.
  2. Your monthly bill has crept up with plans and apps.
  3. You want to own your site and be free to move it.
  4. You don't have the time to write and update it yourself.
  5. It no longer says clearly what you do and where.

If none of them apply, stay on Wix. It's a good builder, and for plenty of businesses it's the right choice.

Wix sites can rank well, and many pass Google's speed checks, so this isn't a post about Wix being slow or broken. It's about the point where renting a DIY tool stops fitting the business you're running.

Are you designing around the template?

You wanted the prices laid out one way and settled for how the template does it. You wanted deposits for bookings and added a widget that looks like it came from another website. You have an idea, check whether Wix can do it, and the answer changes the idea.

At the start, limits help because they stop you fiddling. Once you catch yourself saying "the site can't do that", they've become a ceiling.

Has your Wix bill crept up?

Add it all up, including the plan, the apps, the email and the extras. Wix's UK plans ranged from £9 to £25 a month on annual billing when I checked its pricing page on 26 September 2026, and they cost more on monthly billing. Apps and email come on top.

Per yearOver 5 years
Wix Light, annual billing£108£540
Wix Business, annual billing£300£1,500
Wix Business plus £15 a month of apps and email£480£2,400
A £300 site you own, plus the domain£10 to £15 after the first yearabout £360

The money matters less than what it buys, which is rent. When you stop paying, the site goes.

Do you want to own your website?

Wix's own help centre says a Wix site can't be moved to another host, because it runs on Wix's technology. You can take your domain and your words, but the design and structure stay behind. If you leave, you rebuild.

For a hobby site, that's fine. For a business that has spent years building up content and reviews, it means your most-visited shopfront belongs to a landlord.

Do you have time to keep it up yourself?

The builder is the easy part. The hard part is writing what to say, taking photos, setting up Google and keeping it all current. If the site hasn't changed since you launched because there's never an evening free, you're paying monthly for a tool you don't have time to use.

A site from me includes the words, written from a conversation with you, and I set up your Google Business Profile at the same time.

Does your site still say what you do?

Businesses change. New services, new areas, a new name for what you sell. If your site still describes the business you started, people searching for what you do now won't find it. Google has nothing on the page to match. Read your homepage with fresh eyes and check it names your main service and your town in plain words.

What happens when you move off Wix?

It's smaller than it sounds. A typical move takes about two weeks.

  • Your domain comes with you. It's yours even if Wix registered it. Wix explains how to transfer a domain away.
  • Your content gets rebuilt properly, not copied and pasted.
  • Redirects point your old page addresses to the new ones, so links and search results keep working.
  • The old site stays live until the new one is ready, so customers never find a blank page.

The full walkthrough is in how to leave Wix without losing everything, and there's a side-by-side on my Wix alternative page.

A four-page site from me is £300, or £450 with a logo. If you want to keep editing it yourself, the £750 site has an editing area. Tell me about your business, mention you're on Wix, and I'll tell you whether to move or stay put for another year.

Questions

Can I move my Wix site to another host?
No. Wix's help centre says a Wix site can't be hosted anywhere else, because it runs on Wix's own technology. You can take your domain and your words, but the site itself has to be rebuilt.
Is Wix bad for SEO?
Not in itself. Wix sites can rank well. What usually holds a small business back is thin wording, a page that never says where you work, and an incomplete Google Business Profile.
How much does Wix cost in the UK?
On annual billing, Wix's UK plans ranged from £9 to £25 a month for Light to Business when I checked in September 2026, with Business Elite at £119. Apps and email are extra.
